The program is available in-person and virtually. The text used to guide you is The Grief Recovery Handbook – 20th Anniversary Expanded Edition – The Action Program for Moving Beyond Death, Divorce, and Other Losses by John W. What is Grief?

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to significant emotional loss of any kind. While we can never compare losses, any list would include death and divorce as obvious painful losses. Other losses include retirement, moving, pet loss, financial and health issues, marriage, graduation, end of addictions, and unmet hopes, dreams, and expectations.

The range of emotions associated with grief varies. Grief is individual and unique. As every relationship is unique, so are the feelings and thoughts each person will have about the relationship that has been altered by the loss.

What Our Clients Are Saying

I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for Heather. Heather is compassionate, empathetic and patient. This program had some difficult realizations about myself, but Heather always made me feel safe, which as a result allowed me to be 100 percent authentic with myself, which is where the real healing process took place for me. This is a tremendous gift that Heather possesses, as I have never been able to feel comfortable with being honest about my feelings with others. Thank you Heather for being a heart with ears and validating my thoughts and feelings. I can graciously say that the burden I have carried around for 50+ years, is so much lighter. You have taught me to look within, to reflect and to value myself. I am grateful for your encouragement to dig deep and work through the pain. Heather, spent her time explaining the assignments and was always available for questions. I struggled with my relationship graph, as I was at a loss to find good memories, Heather was so patient with my blank thoughts and talked me through the process, which allowed me to focus on the process. Heather’s encourage and praise made such a difference in my authenticity with myself in this program, which made my outcome incredibly healing. One-on-One Online Support

Denise Tarquinio was my facilitator for the 8 week sessions of Grief to Recovery. The program was hard work. But hard work has never kept me back from taking action in my life to get things done. Denise was very clear and concise on the readings and writings that I had to complete. She also had an amazing way about her with compassion, softness, empathy, and mostly a heart with listening ears. The Grief to Recovery program has changed my life. I started the 8 sessions with Denise Tarquinio in February and finished the end of March 2024. I came into the sessions with an open heart and mind that this was going to help me through the grief process of losing my husband. Denise was totally committed to this program and guided me spiritually through this grief to recovery method. I am encouraging everyone I know who is grieving to try this program and have Denise as their facilitator. She will not let them down. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity. I am forever grateful to Denise. With gratitude, Sue Bowles One-on-One Online Support

My instructor demonstrated exceptional professionalism and sensitivity towards my situation. Her attentive listening, understanding, and responsive approach were invaluable throughout our sessions. I found them to be significantly more beneficial than traditional therapy, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I intend to return for additional grief/loss sessions focused on family members. This was better than any talk therapy I have received. I have useful tools and knowledge that I can utilize going forward, and support from Debbie when I need her again. One-on-One Online Support

I feel confident that I would have had a successful grief completion experience with another coach/facilitator, but Marla was compassionate, direct, honest, and held me accountable. We made a connection that was incredibly helpful to me in doing the hard and sometimes painful work of looking clearly at my actions and at the relationship I had with my daughter. I am not only at ease now, I have grown personally because of Marla. One-on-One Online Support

I found myself in such a scary place, so full of anxiety with no idea how to get myself back to where I could feel joy and happiness again and no idea how I’d gotten myself to this place. A friend knew I’d been really struggling since the loss of my stillborn son almost 5 years ago and mentioned that Grief Recovery may be a good fit for me. I felt it in my heart instantly that I had to try it. Dawn absolutely changed my life and I can’t ever thank her enough! She inspired me so much through this healing process and I can’t give enough praise for all she helped me heal; things I wasn’t even aware needed healing!! I’ve found happiness again and can’t wait to see what else the future holds now! One-on-One Online Support

Krysti helped me work through my grief and anger. I did not realize the amount of layers of anger I had until Krysti walked me through the program. She was a support on my grief journey and allowed me to unravel all of my emotions in a safe and healthy way. I could not have done this without the support of Krysti. One-on-One Online Support

Kim Hodous was so compassionate, a great listener, and number one supporter, that I can't sing her praises enough. She responded to all my needs, supported me through all the homework assignments, and was always there if I needed anything. She was so excited to help anyone that needs to work through the Grief Recovery that it was contagious. It was a comfort to know that Kim had undergone her own traumas in life and how the Grief Recovery Program had worked for her that she had deep respect and compassion for others who are working the program. It is much because of the facilitator, Dr Richelle Hoekstra-Anderson that this program was effective in my opinion. She was able to explain the approach well, demonstrate how the method has impacted her personally, and then walk alongside me as I learned the method. Dr. Richelle was empathetic and genuine throughout the entire process. There is zero question of her authentic nature as well as her knowledge and confidence in the Grief Recovery Method. Although the material in an of itself may be excellent, the practical learning and application of the method relies heavily upon the facilitator. In my case, this was a very supportive experience. Outstanding is the rating I would give Michelle Bader as my facilitator. She was excellent in every way; caring, open, honest, supportive, informative and outstanding!

I wasn’t fully aware of the layers of grief that I'd been carrying and the impact they were having on my life. I recently worked with Dawn who took me through the Grief Recovery Method. It was an incredibly insightful and healing process. I already feel lighter and happier after working on just the first of my many layers of grief and loss. One-on-One Online Support

The Problem

Incomplete recovery from grief can have a lifelong negative impact on our capacity for happiness. Plus, most of the information passed on within our society about dealing with grief is not normal, natural, or helpful. Grief is the emotional response to loss, but most of the information we have learned about dealing with loss is intellectual.

The majority of incorrect ideas about dealing with loss can be summed up in six myths:

The Six Myths of Grief

  • Don’t Feel bad
  • Replace the Loss
  • Grieve Alone
  • Time Heals All Wounds
  • Keep Busy
  • Be Strong for Others

Just looking at the myth that “time heals” creates the idea that a person just has to wait and they will feel better. There are people who have waited 10, 20, 30, and 40 years, and still didn’t feel better! They would tell you that not only had time not healed them but that it had compounded the pain. The other five myths carry equally unhelpful messages.

The Solution

Recovery from loss is accomplished by discovering and completing all of the undelivered communications that accrue in relationships.

Completion of pain caused by loss is what allows us to “let go” and “move forward.” It is almost impossible to move forward without first taking a series of actions that lead to completion.

The Correct Actions

The Grief Recovery Method® Program provides the correct action choices that help people move beyond the pain caused by loss. The program provides a safe environment to look at old beliefs about dealing with loss; to look at what losses have affected your life; and to take new actions which lead to completion of the pain attached to one of those losses.
