My name is Asma Rehman and I’m the founder and director of Grief Recovery Center. A question I receive from many people is, “Wow, this is your practice? How do you do it all?” The answer that comes to mind is the cliché saying, “When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.” This statement absolutely resonates with me. I love what I do, and I have never been so passionate about my career.
I had always heard of working in the private practice setting, but it was just an idea that floated around in my head, until 2015. I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own small practice. At that time, I was still employed full-time at a psychiatric hospital, so I was seeing private practice clients after hours. Because I was receiving inquiries for a lot more clients than I could handle, I built up the courage to expand to a group practice to serve more clients in the community. What started as a small idea quickly grew to what Grief Recovery Center is today – a team of administrative support and 20+ therapists.
Having experienced a painful and life-altering loss of my own, I have a special place in my heart for grievers. I know about the never-ending, uninvited, roller-coaster of emotions grievers experience. I remember some days of not leaving my bed or other days of laughing and smiling just to make others believe I was “okay.” But I wasn’t okay. I was brokenhearted. And like everyone else, I had no idea what to do. That’s when I came across The Grief Recovery Institute®, and the more I learned about the Grief Recovery Program®, the more I felt in my heart that it was exactly what I needed to help me heal. I went through the program myself and decided to pursue a specialization in grief recovery. Through my own healing, I developed a passion to help other grievers.
The vision I have for Grief Recovery Center is to create a safe space for grievers to grieve, no matter what type of loss. A comforting place where grievers can come and just let it all out, without any judgment. As the founder, it’s important that Grief Recovery Center offers help for all types of grief, even beyond the death of a loved one – loss of a relationship or friendship, pet loss, pregnancy-related loss, loss of trust or faith, and the many other events that fall under grief and loss. Grief is inevitable and affects all of us at one point or another.
In addition to grief and loss, Grief Recovery Center welcomes helping clients with other clinical concerns. At the end of the day, we strive to help as many clients as we can. Our vision is to continue growing, continue providing quality therapy to our clients, and for our clients to always have a safe space to come to.
