Online counseling is counseling via the internet. For many people, driving to an office is not an option or difficult to schedule due to various reasons such as work schedule, setting up child care, mobility concerns, lack of transportation, or any other barriers to seeking in-office counseling. Thus, many clients choose web-counseling for convenience and the ability to receive the treatment they need in the privacy and comfort of their own home.
Other benefits to online counseling: clients are able to save time and fuel costs involved in traveling to the office, online counseling reduces the need to find a new therapist if major life changes occur such as moving, a secure and encrypted web-based service offers client confidentiality and counseling over the internet reduces discomfort of potentially running into someone you may know, in the office waiting room.
Online counseling works very similar to in-office counseling. However, rather than coming into a therapist’s office, the client would receive counseling through the encrypted video conferencing service VSee. VSee is similar to Skype because it is free and easy to use. However, VSee is HIPPA compliant and keeps information secure. Through online counseling, the individual, family or couple would discuss their challenges and struggles which they are seeking counseling for. Plus, research has shown that online counseling is as effective as in-office counseling for most issues.
Here are some examples of issues treated via online counseling:
- Grief and loss
- Alcohol and/or drug use
- Relationship conflicts
- Stress management
- Communication and social skills
- LGBT issues
- Personal growth
Online counseling is provided by licensed therapists who have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in the field of counseling, psychotherapy or psychology. Counselors who provide online counseling are held to the same ethical standards as counselors who provide counseling in-office.
In order to receive online counseling, clients must be a resident in the State of Texas. Clients must also complete new client paperwork and be able to submit them via email or fax. The fee schedule for online counseling is the same as in-office counseling. Clients are able to pay for services rendered by using any major credit card. For clients utilizing insurance for online counseling, benefits will need to be verified by office staff prior to first counseling appointment.
